Prospect Watch:  Graham Pauley and Eguy Rosario went hitless in Wednesday’s loss.  It is notable that while Eguy has played third in both games since returning to Triple-A, Pauley played left field on Tuesday and first base Wednesday. … Brett Sullivan continues to hit. The 30-year-old catcher added two more extra-base hits, giving him 14 and 22 RBI in 23 Triple-A games.  He is second on the team with a .942 OPS. … Center fielder Bryce Johnson is having a fantastic month of May.  After hitting .203 in April, Johnson is hitting .478/.586/.652 this month, including four straight multi-hit games. He stole a pair of bases making this the seventh straight year the 28-year-old has swiped at least 10. … Kevin Kopps rebounded from a tough outing last week to throw two easy innings. Most importantly for the former third-round pick, Kopps has only allowed one walk over his last four innings. He had ended April by walking a hitter in six straight appearances.

Key Stats: RHP Adam Mazur (W, 3-1) 6 IP, 2 H, BB, 3 K; 2B Marcos Castañon 2-for-4, 2B, R; RF Cole Cummings 1-for-2, R, BB, RBI, HBP; C Brandon Valenzuela 1-for-3, 2 R, RBI, BB; CF Robert Perez Jr 3-for-4, 2B, R, 4 RBI; 1B Robbie Tenerowicz 2-for-4, 2B, R

Prospect Watch: The Missions received another fantastic start from Adam Mazur, who threw six shutout innings for the second straight outing. This time he allowed only three baserunners. After surrendering a one-out walk in the first, Mazur retired the next 11 in a row. Over his six innings of dominance, the RoughRiders never got a runner to second base. Mazur had one poor start against Wichita in which he gave up six earned runs. In his five other appearances, the 23-year-old has allowed just one earned run on 14 hits over 28 innings. … Marcos Castañon had his second straight multi-hit game. The infielder has raised his OPS nearly 70 points (up to .692) since coming off the injured list two days ago. … Two years ago, Robert Perez Jr was one of the best players in A-Ball.  He hit .288/.398/.523 with 27 HR between Low-A and High-A.  After a difficult year in Double-A last year (17 HR, .743 OPS), Perez signed a free-agent deal with the Padres.  While the now-23-year-old has yet to hit his power stride, he had his first three-hit game of the year, adding a season-high four RBI. After a slow start to the season, Perez is hitting .350/.350/.450 in May.

Roster Moves: Before the game, the Padres signed 29-year-old Robbie TenerowiczThe former Cal Bear was hitting .269/.344/.404 with the Mariners Double-A team before being released last week.  He has a lifetime .275/.361/.430 line across eight minor league seasons. This move gives the Missions a capable bat after losing Nathan Martorella and Jakob Marsee in the Luis Arraez deal. Tenerowicz had a pair of hits including a double while playing first base in his system debut.

Key Stats: LHP Jagger Haynes (L, 0-3) 3.1 IP, H, 2 ER, 3 BB, K; DH Ethan Salas 0-for-3, BB; CF Homer Bush Jr 2-for-4, 2B, 2B Nerwilian Cedeño 2-for-4

Homer Bush, Jr. adds dynamism to the TinCaps lineup. (Photo: Jeff Nycz)

Prospect Watch: Homer Bush Jr had a two-hit night including a double down the left field line for his first extra-base-hit of the season. Bush leads the organization with 13 stolen bases, but had only singles through his first 100 plate appearances. Bush is currently on a five-game hit streak and is hitting .346/.414/.385 in May. The speedster has 10 infield hits to bolster his overall .356 on-base percentage. … Jagger Haynes started strong, retiring 10 of the first 11 batters he faced. Then, he lost his release point and went walk, hit batter, double, walk with one out in the fourth inning before giving way. The double was the only hit he allowed on the evening, and the start lowered his ERA to 9.00.  When Haynes pounds the zone he is effective in generating a lot of weak contact, but he has struggled with both command and control on the way to issuing 16 walks against 11 strikeouts in 14 innings.

Key Stats: RHP Jose Luis Reyes (L, 1-3) 3.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 7 K; RHP Dwayne Matos 2.1 IP, BB, 3 K; SS Rosman Verdugo 2-for-4; 2B Alain Camou 2-for-4, 3B

Rosman Verdugo is seeing better results in his second pass at the Cal League. (Robert Escalante)

Prospect Watch: Like Haynes, Jose Luis Reyes started his outing about as dominant as possible. He struck out the first three batters all swinging and allowed just one runner on a hit-by-pitch with six strikeouts through the first three innings. In the fourth, the 21-year-old from Mexicali allowed three straight hits to start the inning. He came back to get two outs, but couldn’t finish the frame, giving way after allowing a double and a walk. Still, the seven strikeouts are a season-high and second-best in his career. … Rosman Verdugo collected his third two-hit game in his last five. The 19-year-old infielder already has more home runs than he did in 113 games last year and has turned it on to post an .829 OPS in May. … Second baseman Alain Camou made his Cal League debut with had a pair of hits, including a triple. Camou, 20, spent all of 2023 in the ACL, producing a .750 OPS. He went 2-for-4 in the ACL to start the year but was moved up to Lake Elsinore to provide the team with additional infield depth. The Phoenix native signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2022.

ACL Padres 3, ACL Reds 1

Key Stats: CF Donte Grant 3-for-3, R, SB (3); 2B Ismael Javier 1-for-3, 2B, RBI; RHP Yerry Landinez IP, 2 K; RHP Maikel Miralles 3 IP, 5 K; LHP Braian Salazar 3 IP, H, ER, 3 K, 1 BB

Prospect Watch: If the name Yerry Landinez sounds familiar, its because he is one of the longest-tenured players in the Padres’ organization. He signed in 2017 and debuted as an infielder in what was then still called the Arizona Summer League in 2018, but after a huge growth spurt and 98 strikeouts in 255 plate appearances across two seasons, the Padres moved him to the mound. Working with a mid-90s fastball and slider that shows promise, Landinez struck out 57 in 51 innings in his first two seasons on the mound, but has gave up quite a bit of hard contact. The reliever missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery and is wrapping up a rehab assignment in preparation to join a full-season affiliate. … After making his stateside debut with one inning of work Saturday, 19-year-old Maikel Miralles came back with three perfect innings and five strikeouts. After signing out of Venezuela last January, the righty logged just 10.1 innings in the DSL. … Center fielder Donte Grant had the best night of his professional career, tallying three hits while swiping his third bag of the season. The 19-year-old from Puyallup, Washington signed with the Padres as an undrafted free agent last year. He’s flashed plus speed but is still developing the other parts of his game. He’s reached base in nine of his first 15 plate appearances.
